Being the first official recipient of Mani's 'Artspeak of the Day Award', and having received my award for introducing to this group the concept of drawing a line with child like conviction. I propose that Mani:

1) establish an official list of winners on his web site; 2) state the reason for our award; 3) design a graphic - I mean a nice one - you can do it : 'Artspeak of the Day Award ' 4) that he provide a link to the Award winner's site; 5) that if the award winner displays the award graphic and corresponding comments that the award winner provide a reciprocal link to Mani's Artspeak of the Day Award page.

A 'nice' graphic would undermine the very point of the award. The graphic should be ugly - possibly dark and muddy - and most definitely unrecognisable as a graphic. A greasy thumbprint with some vague, scratchy shapes in it might be a starting point.... so long as it doesn't look like a thumbprint.

The best Artspeak I ever read was by John Ruskin. Now that guy could really use 500 words where 20 would suffice. Greenberg was stupid while the pompous long winded Shapiro was knowledgeable but really in essence had little to say,

Ruskin was intelligent and interestingly nutty and bone cruchingly verbose. Everyone used to plow through him in the past, or at least make believe they did. Anyone with the slightest intellectual pretence at that time had his complete works.

I also remember when André Malraux's Voices of silence just had to grace your bookshelf. I wonder if anyone ever read the whole thing?

Haha. Congrats Keith! Remember of course that Mani's interpretation of a nice graphic might not agree with yours.

Yes Ruskin was verbose - you have to search for the 20 good words in his 200 - maybe I shouldn't admit this but I have his complete set of Modern Painters and some of his other writings, (I still go through them periodically for ideas).
