The small town of Carrizozo, NM is being delivered from oblivion by artists who are finding it a great place to live.

The reason artists are being attracted to this, and other small towns in New Mexico are two-fold:

1. Santa Fe, NM is now THE alternative to NYC.

2. Artists can no longer afford to live in Santa Fe, which has been taken over by the nouveau riche. So they move to other small towns where real estate is literally 'dirt cheap.' Lots of adobe construction, if you understand the terminology. For those who don't, adobe is natural clay indigenous to the region, which, when reinforced with ordinary straw, makes sun-baked bricks that are second to none as a building material.
