You'll need to look on the web at those web sites that offer chat rooms or email exchanges. There are a ton of them out there. There are fewer choices on Usenet since the web has just about made the net forums obsolete. The tide ebbs and flows in this particular forum as well, and seems to be ebbing more than flowing of late.

There are good mailing lists on Yahoogroups. There are groups devoted to the arts, specifically to painting, and even more specifically to acrylic painting. Yahoo has a fairly efficient and user friendly search function for its groups.

For whatever reaosn, it seems the art community never really grabbed hold of Usenet the way the music community and other groups did. Best web site along these likes is WetCanvas.com. Lots of different forums devoted to different media, subject matter, styles, etc - just what I would have expected in the newsgroup hierarchy. Typical awkward user interface compared to a good newsreader, but has the advantage of integrating graphics well.
