Can anyone give me an idea of how to get started in art collecting? I don't know very much about it, but I like art, and have funds with which to begin. Thanks for any help!

Oliver...thanks for your response. I don't know, it just seems like there should be an 'art collecting for dummies' kind of book! I want to learn how to collect for investment. I guess I'll hit the local library... Bill

If you want investment, try stocks and shares, do not contribute to the comodicatation of art. Please buy art that you like, not because of its supposed financial worth, or potential worth....

<< Can anyone give me an idea of how to get started in art collecting? >>

There are many factors to consider here. Just as in any other type of investment, there are low and high risks, and quick or slow returns.

I do believe you should like the art you invest in. If you currently do not know what you like, I would suggest developing a relationship with a gallery whose work initially interests you. Once you've decided what you like, the gallery should be able to help you get the art even if they do not have it themselves. (The internet is a good tool for researching what you like.)

If you would like to let me know where you live, I may know of a gallery in your area. I also subscribe to trade magazines - once you find what you are looking for I may be able to connect you with someone.

Magazines - you may want to subscribe to ArtNews or American Art Review. The first focuses more on cutting edge, while the second showcases a bit more traditional gallery openings, reviews, and biographies of artists. I'm sure there are other magazines worth reading, also.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

One piece of advice I give all beginners ( I have collected for forty years and my collection has beem 'museumed' often): start with the most expensive work by the most famous mainstream artists you like. They have an international base for their value, and you can sell the works at close to the price you pay if you need to. I say this because the beginner often buys things he discovers later that he is less than enthusiastic about ( the first piece I bought was a small Henry Moore ( $280 and a year to pay): he was famous, it was exciting, and the whole 'plunge' was exhilerating
