That's a bunk of b.s.

There are thousands of lawyers available for artists that work as volunteers, or, for a very small retainer. You can find them on the web by searching for 'Lawyers for the Arts' or something like that and you will find them in almost every state.

I challenge your numbers - thousands - but you're correct and I'm correct. 'MOST people don't have the energy or the finances to sue' and unless you've tried to work with volunteers you can't speak from experience. You will get what you pay for, in litigation as in life! And MOST of the volunteers don't get involved in litigation, but rather focus on 'mediation' between the parties. That means the person infringing your copyright might be persuaded to cease and desist - but it's an entirely different matter if you choose to go to court and sue for damages. Ask your lawyer friend about it! Lucky for me, my granddaughter is a lawyer! And yes, she does pro bono work too.

The key to the whole thing is money, of course. If someone has infringed on your copyright and is clearly making a lot of money from it, you will be able to find a lawyer who will work for a percentage of whatever you can get the copyright violater to cough up.

But the lawyer would only get involved if, first, you had concrete evidence (registration or at least some very reliable witnesses) that you were the copyright holder (remember, if the work is indeed yours, then you ARE the copyright holder; registration is simply a means of helping better protect a copyright you already have by virtue of having created an original work)and, second, only if the copyright violater was someone with deep pockets, such as a poster company who was selling thousands of reproductions with your art without your permission, or some company that was using your art in its advertising campaign, without your permission.

But, remember, such 'contingency fee' lawyers will be only working for you if they smell
