Has anyone else been tempted by the ebay lots? If the number of bids suggest a genuine interest, perhaps it would be worth me purchasing some of those UK lots for future resale? What does someone more knowledgable on the Britart market think? Cheers.

I've been selling my artwork on eBay for a little while now, and have been astounded at the low prices that some of the artwork actually sells for.

I admit there are a lot of opportunists who try to make a few bob by posting stuff which they purport to be art, but when you monitor the sales, you see that they soon run out of steam and stop posting on the auctions.

I have seen some amazing art sell for peanuts compared to the galleries, and for the life of me, can't work out how the artists can sell it at such a low price.

I haven't made my fortune by selling on eBay, in fact I probably sell at a loss when you consider the time it takes to e-mail the winning bidder, bank the cheque, wrap the art, go to the post office etc, but I now have a kernel of customers who buy from my website and want to be informed whenever I produce new work.

If I was a small gallery owner I would watch what is happening on eBay because in one respect I'd be concerned about losing business, and in another respect I would view it as an opportunity to buy first class work at an exceptionally low price for re-sale.

There are some forums on eBay where art pricing etc is discussed at length, and I can say that the current low prices will not last forever. All the artists are aware that they cannot continue like this for much longer, but it only takes a couple of sellers to put work up for next to nothing and a lot of lemmings will follow.

So, in answer to your original question. Yes, there are some excellent bargains to be had from eBay. But don't tell anyone otherwise they will all be buying from there

You may want to try looking at the UK Artists Self Representing category. That's where most of the artists ply their trade. It's a relatively new category, and will take a little time before it starts buzzing.

Here is a link to it if you are interested.

I sell art Prints on eBay, and I average 1500-2000(Canadian) a month doing it, but the big sales are from people that visit my site after seeing the art on eBay. I would never make a practice of putting originals on eBay, only prints. I have never sold an original on ebay, just lots of prints. Just yesterday I sold an original to some one that had seen the print on eBay. So it does boost business and it pays for itself as well. Just a bit of my experience. Clayton. www.talisart.com

We have boughten off ebay as well. Several of the sellers are galleries who are clearing out stock. They can't really have a sale at the gallery because that would negatively affect the price of the other peices of art, and scare some of their buyers. Some times the provenence is dicey and they want to sell the work in another forum rather than their gallery.

But some are doing exactly what you are suggesting and buying off e bay to re-sell. Including an auction house which shall remain nameless.

I don't find this amaizing at all. Most stuff in galleries can be found in any art school paint racks and garbage cans by the millions.

The fact that without the song and dance provided galleries this sort of stuff sells for little more than the value of the materials should astound no one with half a brain and some knowledge of economics.

your's included.

You must be naive.

You mean garbage.

Why?

I think the reason is that the work cost near nothing and really compliments the crap that they sell on consignment at high prices. Fort a few hundred dollars a dealer can fill his gallery with the same crap and not have to pay off and deal with tempramental artists

...no skill no art 'The Emperor's New Clothes aren't clothing you stupid little girl. They are body installations containing invisible Color Fields.'
