Acrylic mediums work excellently both as an adhesive and for sizing canvas in preparation for oil painting. I've generally seen gloss medium recommended as an adhesive and matte medium as a sizing, usually diluted 1:1 with water and applied in two coats.

If it doesn't appeal to you because of the preparation needed, you will find that there are ready-to-use versions now available. You might also want to consider PVA adhesive available from hardware stores - it is generally used to seal walls before painting and often as carpet glue.
