The thought of using rabbit skin glue doens't appeal to me. Can somebody please recommend an alternative glue?

Acrylic mediums work excellently both as an adhesive and for sizing canvas in preparation for oil painting. I've generally seen gloss medium recommended as an adhesive and matte medium as a sizing, usually diluted 1:1 with water and applied in two coats.

What do you want to use it for?

Besides you can't see the rabbit.

If it doesn't appeal to you because of the preparation needed, you will find that there are ready-to-use versions now available. You might also want to consider PVA adhesive available from hardware stores - it is generally used to seal walls before painting and often as carpet glue.
