I'm new to this list, but I've been reading for the last couple days, so I'm keeping on top of what is being discussed. Now I want to thrw out my own idea...

What's the general thought of those of you who freguent this list? Is photography a form of fine art? Or is it not?

Hi Jenn, I think we are mostly painters here, except for Lauri who sculpts. I do assemblage occasionally, but as far as fine arts today (contemporary) - photography RULES! Cindy Sherman, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White, Mapplethorpe (someone just mentioned him), etc. Absolutely fine art! Kay

Personally, I can't look at Henri Cartier-Bresson's work without thinking 'Fine Art!' Seeing his work several years ago cause me to abandon all pretenses about being a 'photographer' because the distance between being 'competent' and being 'expert' seemed so vast, yet I couldn't put my finger on what Cartier-Bresson was doing to travel that distance. If you look at some old Bergman films you see another great photographer making art, Gunnar Fischer - or today Robbi Muller who films for Wim Wenders. So my answer to your poll is a definite 'yes.'
