Hi, my name's Leila and I would like to know why the wooden posing doll was originally made, and around what year it was first used. I've heard there's an intentional reason why wooden posing dolls can't move in all the ways most people can. Thanks for your help

This is known as a manikin. The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) shows the term, and the object, being used by Dutch painters as early as 1570. So, to find the origin you'd need to look up histories of around that period.

The Manikin is defined more clearly in around 1730 in a folio by Bailey called 'Manequine (with Painters, &c.)' 'a little statue or model usually made of was or wood, the junctures whereof are so contrived, that it may be put into any attitude at pleasure'.
