Odd request I know, but can you think of stabbing images in fine art, such as Frida Kahlo's 'The Little Deer,' Paolo Veronese's 'Lucretia Stabbing Herself,' Artemesia Gentileschi's 'Judith Beheading Holofernes'? I need some more.

Judith beheading Holofernes was hardly a stabbing!!!

Slicing, cutting, carving, sawing and chopping maybe, but not stabbing.

There's Delacroix's 'Death of Sardanapalus', for one. And more than likely there's some in the Bayeux tapestry (lots of murder and mayhem along the borders well as the central area, so maybe there's something for you there).

Cheers;

Chris

[The Death of Marat?

The asassination of Julius Caesar?

Brutus falling on his sword after the above?

Any battle painting featuring combat in the era before firearms is bound to show a little cut-and-thrust, if you need more...

What's this for- a PHD thesis? ]

That got me to thinking about all the religious paintings showing various 'stabbings.' Not sure what defines 'stabbing' but seems to me that's what happened to Christ during crucifixion when he was stabbed in the side with a spear. I'm sure there is no reliable count of the number of times that scene has been depicted by various artists. But the more gruesome ones are of that saint, Sebastian, if being shot through with numerous arrows qualifies.

And I can only guess at how many 'stabbings' are shown in the countless works by western artists. Especially if 'stabbing of animals' (bison in particular) is considered.

The most terrifying fine art painting I recall relating to stabbing is Henry Fuseli's 'Lady Macbeth Grasping the Daggers.' While Fuseli's masterpiece does not show the actual stabbing, the bloodly daggers and the ghostly figures of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth reveal the psychological horror involved in muder by stabbing in a more unsettling way, possibly, than any painting of an actual stabbing could do. This is a deeply disturbing
