That the things you 'expect' to be in a work of art (like a shadow, a highlight, a subtle change in color, or material texture) start out as a blank white surface.

And that someone had to 'put' those things there, hoping you would notice they were not there in the beginning.

And that took effort.

An effort easily taken for granted.

Because of what you expected.

But not always respected.

If a shadow, for example, surprises us by looking like a shadow and also by being unusual by its beauty or some other quality, this is what should be respected.

But there are a lot of ordinary paintings out there that do most of the right things.
