How horribly upsetting to find such adversarial communications from one 'artist' to another, labeling another's work with such forceful words as 'third rate repetitive impressionism' like Mani did to Mayo - well, I just had to look, having read the book - and came away disappointed from the site that fairly screams 'no skill, no art', as if the manipulation of form was art, or at least painting.
Where, for want of a better word, is the color? Sure, there's the color of the object, and such colors that indicate texture, and value shifts to indicate a light source - but what of those surprises we all take joy in, the bounce light, the essence of color itself which IS light?
Perhaps the inestimable Mani is overly affected by the Surrealist's disease which purports that if it ain't 'my kind' of art, it ain't art - not to mention that other aspect, the 'mouth runneth over' syndrome. And maybe this will be viewed as an invitation to a flame war. Well, I spoze it is. But only a fool would take up that challenge.
And maybe, fool that I am, I have just done something similar... Now, the question is, will there be retaliation, maybe even escalation?

Yes, and yes. Mani *IS* Usenet. He's been here forever, outlasted dozens, scores, maybe hundreds of challengers, will always be here. He feeds on the attention, would shrivel up and blow away like dust if ignored. But every answer, challenge, reference, oh-so-cute remark to or about him charges his battery, giving him a life expectancy of 1000 yrs. Because (simple fact proven again and again) everyone thinks they have the ultimate put-down, so more energy is given him, including my contribution. Forgive.

Hmmm...I thought Mani's comment was directed at my work...even so it really doesn't amount to much...Mani does have some intelligent insights sometime...but when he lambastes artists such as Pissarro and Corot I loose all respect for him...he's an enigma...and quite humorous at times...but in the end getting one's jollys on usenet is a bit pathetic...
