Hi

I have done paintings (oil) on paper (which was first coated with acrylic Gloss Medium Varnish) which I want to mount onto canvas. Any suggestions how this would be done, or can you refer me to a web site that might discuss this?

I had a bad experience painting over acrylic gloss medium. I put gloss medium over a painting then left it to do other things. I returned to the painting later and did some more work on it over the gloss medium. When it was finally finished, I put some Jo Sonja matte varnish, which is supposed to be acrylic, over the painting. The Sonja stuff picked up some of the new paint and pulled it away. This means that the acrylic paint I put on over the first gloss medium would not adhere to the surface. If you plan to revarnish after applying your paper to canvas, this might be important. You can use acrylic medium and possibly varnish as collage glue. In other words, you can paint the surface of the canvas or the back of the paper with some sort of acrylic medium and glue the paper down. This is what I have read, but I have not tried it. You should make a test sheet with exactly the same combination of materials. You might want to use a brayer to get any air bubbles out.
