Newbie Needs help in art collecting 2

Hello again,

Since I have put up the first post thingy, people been asking if it for fun or for money that I want to collect. Well to say I like to do a little of both. Cause I like going to the garage sales and buying paintings (hopefully buying that one gem.). Or even having fun buying a rare piece of Egypt art. Either way I like to know... What to look for, for example I heard today about artiest useing the canvas 2 times and you could see the other painting under neeth. is that important in collecting and is it better to get older paintings or newer ones form newer artiest. just little things like that when I am looking at that painting on the front lawn going for 2-3 dollars...
