At a talk on painting technique and equipment, the speaker advised strongly that canvas covered boards for oil painting, though sold as primed, should always still be given a few coatings of acrylic primer.

I'd like to read any comments on this advice.

Well, why not? The canvas covered boards I used a long time ago (from Talens I believe) were covered a bit on the thin side to my taste.

Possibly the speaker was suggesting that the surface should be made smoother by the application of a couple of more coats of gesso (to fill in the texture of the canvas surface)? Some techniques don't work very well when the texture of the canvas is 'grabbing' paint.
