I am a painter who has 10 pieces finished this year and I'm about to try for my first grant. Help me figure out what they want to see for a 'Budget' or a 'project' when all I want to do is to be able to devote 8 hours a day to painting and be able to afford to live at the same time! See my art at www.geocities.com/meg.. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it I really need suggestions or ideas.

Maybe you could write your proposal in the abstract method of mindlessly typing words onto paper, allowing the proposal itself to show you what it wants to say.

LOL

Seriously though, hit Yahoo.

Suggestion #1. Get rid of the busy ground behind your paintings on the web site. Suggestion #2. Don't apply for a grant until you've had lots of exposure, some good press and have been purchased by a corporate or VIP collector. Then you can work out a project and set a realistic budget.

I disagree, always apply for grants, I know tons of people who got one, (including myself at the start) with out a huge resume behind them.

Great grant proposals are tough to write...you must make them clear as hell, make them very readable, even by a fourth grader. If you get into the theoretical jargon it will bore the committee and they will reject the grant.

As for money, keep it fair. If they give up to 30 K for materials and a years work then by all means apply for that. Give a detailed budget and be clear about what you want and why.

Good luck.

There's tons of information on applying for, writing, and getting grants on the web. All you have to do is look for it.

Most library reference depts. will also have books that are specifically written to help people writing grants. Go to a bookseller's web site (Barnes & Noble is my preference) and type 'grant writing' in the search window. B&N returned 418 references, the leading one of which is, you guessed it:

GRANT WRITING FOR DUMMIES - (duh)

web site.

As your paintings are 'busy' and mostly cool in colour, I'd suggest a flat ground in a complimentary warm hue, or a neutral colour in a light tone.

Thanks! I like it. Much calmer and less 'arts and craftsy'
