I have the dismal task of trying to value some original paintings for probate purposes. I imagine this may be very different to the insured value, or the valuation of the gallery he bought them from and, as the tax man will want 40% of that figure, I need to get it right. How does one go about getting a true market value on what may be obscure artists/pictures? Are there any online directories etc that might give me a clue? In case anyone can point me in the right direction, the artists are Victor Boyer born 1910, Hans Richter 1920, Willi de Pre 1922, Robert Chailloux 1913, Bouvard (Petite-Fille), and somebody called Danzinger (Hungarian). Any advice appreciated.

In that instance, I'd value them 'worthless' and let the tax man be damned!

Hm. A novel approach but the Capital Taxes Office here in UK have a reputation to uphold, which includes removing your trousers etc. They'll also probably turn out to be the world's leading experts on paintings. They let you get away with stuff while you're alive because they know they can squeeze the last of your toothpaste when you die.

I am not sure of the quality of IR expertise on paintings, but Hans Richter is a fairly well known name and may ring a bell even with them.

Many thanks. All very confusing to the layman. A couple of these artists don't appear in any directories I've seen but their pictures are on sale for £10K+ in one particular gallery. Whether they ever sell any is another issue. The Revenue want the 'market value', and you are expected to take 'reasonable steps' to get an accurate valuation. Knowing nothing about art, I could interpret that as what a local dealer would offer me in cash. Seems like a massive grey area. Maybe that's how it's meant to be.

How does one go about

In order to reach appraisals defensible legally, you probably will need to contract with a recognized art or insurance appraisal service. These can be found through galleries or in business or other appropriate directories. You might call up the art department of a university or a museum to get leads. Some museums may even perform this service.
