I read this story but don't recall where. Now trying to verify or locate a source. The story ... a woman bugged Picasso to do a sketch of her; he resisted, pleading too busy; finally relented and did a sketch in some brief time. Asked the price, Picasso named a rather large figure. The woman complained, saying, in effect, it's too much, you spent less than an hour on the sketch. Picasso replied with words to the effect "Yes, Madame, but I have spent a life time preparing."

Anyone heard this story before? If yes, does it have a credible source?

Thanks for the leads.

Yes, arttyro, I have heard this story before. I always believed it was an urban legend though. Now, looking if I can find a source for it I am even more convinced of that since there simply isn't even one reliable source to be found.

Thanks for the reply, copper. Where did you look for a source or a lead? I did a few internet searches and did not turn up a source or even a lead. I'm still trying to recall where I read the story - I know I did not invent it! And I have to think if the story were factual, art mavens would know of the sketch, the person and the story. Anyone else have a lead?

Well, I'm pretty much in the same position as you are: I have known this 'legend' for a long time already (something like how we're told about Columbus' Egg, it's 'known' but no-one can find evidence for it so we all know it's a 'legend'.
