I cannot read art magazines that are chock full of ads, or cheesy 'how to do faux painting for your bidet' tutorials.

I am looking for a magazine available in the US that is devoted to reporting on the current art landscape for a contemporary audience. It may reflect back to earlier periods, but I'd like to find a magazine that is informative, entertaining, and thought provoking.

Any suggestions please?

'Chock full of ads' is what pays the price for printing the magazine. If magazines had to rely on subscriptions to offset their cost and provide a profit the subscriptions would be unaffordable to most of us. And where you live in the world determines which magazines are available to you without paying a premium overseas shipping charge - so you need to specify what country you're in if you want recommendations.

Residence is in the Northeastern coast of the United States of America.

And you and I both know that while advertising obviously pays for the pages, some magazines are ridiculously overfilled with ('chock full of' ads that reside in 70% of the publication.

That isn't the kind of magazine I am inquiring about. ;o)

The problem with magazines like this is that they are 'ego' publications where the artist pays for the pages, or the gallery does. And since it's titled 'American' painting, it's not likely to have much interest to someone like myself who is interested in the international art scene, not regionalism.

If your goal is to learn about what's what in the art world generally, my own personal choice is ART IN AMERICA. I also think ART FORUM to be worthwhile, but a bit too cerebral for general audiences, IMO.

We should take a vote here on who subscribes to what, and which magazine is thought to have the fewest ads - besides AMERICAN PAINTING.
