Rosemary Cosentino Mapping Journey IV,Oil on wood panel,12″ x 12″, 2003
This painting, which I find absolutely wonderful is one of a group of stolen pieces by the artist Rosemary Cosentino was stolen from a gallery in Toronto several years ago, along with several other pieces that the artist was delivering to the gallery, even before they were taken out of their carrying bag.
I wasn’t aware of this, but stumbled across this information on the artists website after following a link from an interview (extremely interesting) that she had done with Michael Corbin from absoluthearts blog.
Rosemary is very into Old Masters techniques and make all of her own paints, and uses other old masters techniques in her work as well creating and interesting new material old look tension. Even in this portrait, the intense gaze of the subject is so “today’s woman” as apposed say, to the women Rembrandt would draw, but the technique so accurate and rich - it is a bit unexpected.
Anyway, the interview on absolutehearts is about making a living as an artist, while compromising in a good way, which is something most of us have to deal with in one way or another.
