I heard a news story about KODAK the other day, related to their film business, stock price etc. In that report it was stated that for the first time - this year 2003 - the sale of digital cameras exceeds the sale of film cameras, including the disposable kind. Hard to believe, but that's what was reported.
Now as to your question, some photographers know how to photograph art and some don't. And those that do usually find it's a very small part of their output so they may not advertise that service. Call around to whatever photographers advertise in your locale and ask them if they do art work. And ask around of any 'professional' artists in the area to see who the recommend. If there is an art college nearby, students often have good access to the school's photographic labs and cameras and might do the work for a fraction of what a professional would charge.
Cost of anything other than 35mm is going to skyrocket exponentially. You can easily learn to do the 35mm yourself, and that is the format most often asked for in juried shows, gallery presentations, etc. - although digital is slowly making inroads in that regard too. In fact you can have slides made from digital by some photo processors since they too are faced with responding to the digital revolution in photography.
