'8 Painters: New Views'

The Nov. 2003, edition of Art in America reviews the paintings of 8 currently working painters. The cover photo is by one of the 8 featured in the article, one Bruce Pearson, who combines oil and acrylic paints on Styrofoam. The examples in the article are dimensioned as 6 X 7 feet, so these are not small pieces.

Quoting from the article:

'...underneath the paint is a support of Styrofoam that Pearson has carved into with a heated metal element or 'hot wire.' (skip ahead) Then when the carving is done, he begins to apply the paint, to conceal the Styrofoam and differentiate individual shapes. (skip ahead) During the final phases, Pearson uses a roller to apply paint to the highest points of the surface and then uses small brushes to add highlights.'

This should reek of sacrilege to those in this forum who advocate using 'only traditional' methods and materials, and worry about the archivalness of their paintings.

I did this in high school actually. Some of the funky shapes were painted with metallic acrylic paint. I wish I could get back the points I lost on my IQ from inhaling the melting styrofoam for my traditional painting pursuits now.

I think the transvestite leo papandreou is an object lesson in the dangers of too much styrofoam.
