Hello, I have a question...

Academics have been famously disproving works supposedly by Rembrandt for a spell now, and forgers have been forging.

Does anyone know, approximately, how many Rembrandt paintings have been debunked as copies by admirers, imitators, or frauds, etc., since the year 1900? How has the number been reduced since the turn of the century?

Also, is this occurring with any other artist, that is, to such a large and prominent scale as is occurring with Mr. Van Rijn?

Any supporting or critical thoughts on this? I am aware of some people who smell nothing more than scholarly brain-flexing at the price of history.

And yes, I am aware that my subject heading is sophomorically witty and has most certainly been used before...

In the 19th century it was suspected that R. couldn't have produced that many paintings. This led to a close look at the matter.

Many of the non-R's were done by R's contemporaries which have painted over forged signatures. Others have an authentic signature but weren't done by R. This came about because R. ran an art school and his students couldn't sign (By law as I understand it) and R. signed these, perhaps as a compliment.

I think this is why R. seems to have produced many inferior works which do not compare with his best.
