I use Daler Rowney Low Odour thinner for underpainting and glazing with linseed. I want to experiment with a medium consisting of LO thinner, linseed and damar (also Daler Rowney), but I have read of disolving problems when using LO thinner and damar. Is this only applicable when dissolving pure resin for varnishing, or should I be using turps for a combined medium?

Specifically - mixing damar varnish with other thinners:

In order to dissolve damar crystals you need to use 'real' turpentine. Once you have it in liquid varnish form, you can thin it with mineral spirits. When using odorless (etc) thinners you should experiment to see how well they mix.

I just dissolved a 'five pound' cut of damar crystals into gum spirits of turpentine and the solution reached the saturation point before all the crystals dissolved. I decided it's because my studio space is only about 60ºF these days. A day of warming in the bright sun did the trick. ie; warming speeds the dissolving.
