Does anyone have any comments about the use of pseudonyms in art? That is to say, signing one's works with the 'nom d'art' rather the legal name. How does this effect sales and payment? Does that artist have to register the pseudonym in some way? Is it a private agreement between gallery and artist?

Many writers have done this, Stephen King for a good recent example. It doesn't matter. The only drawback would be achieving a name with one body of work and then confusing the public with a different name on a similar body. (or this could be an interesting art piece.) You can sign it any way you want and if you can get it represented and sold, great. It's fine to use a nom de plume for painting. No you don't have to register it. It could be a public nom de plume as King's alias now is, or it could be kept private if you wish. Beware though some may know who you are if you show up to the opening.

Mani will give me a kiss for saying this, but there are far too many works out there that should have been left either unsigned or at best left 'anonymous!'
