What does the term Frottie mean? I saw a painting in an art book (I think a Gainsborough). there was a statement saying that the face was finished with a pink frottie.

I think it comes from the French term "frotter", meaning "to rub". It's a thin transparent (or semi- transparent) glaze that was rubbed in with a stiff briste brush with very little paint on, in the last phases of an oil painting.
